Banks7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Regarding the Bodyguard: both the Doctor and the Bodyguard were clearly from the Culture and had been intimately close before coming to the planet of the book. The other story was a little more complex, but intriguing with some colourful characters.Īn interesting tale of Culture intervening in less developed societies. I was strong drawn to the character of the Doctor, who was another of Iain M Banks strong female characters, and I enjoyed reading her tale. The story is not as connected as you would think, and only comes to a climax towards the very end. The second story is one of the opponents of the King, those who are trying to dispose him. The Doctor you know from the start is a Culture citizen, and she has a whole of host of Culture magic tricks which in addition to a good bed side manner she uses to keep her King well. The first is the story of the Doctor and the King. To recap The ten books of the Culture are: Consider Phlebas, 1987 The Player of Games,1988 Use of Weapons, 1990 The State of the Art, 1991 Excession, 1996 Inversions, 1998 Look to Windward,2000 Matter,2008 Surface Detail, 2010 The Hydrogen Sonata, 2012. ![]() ![]() I have read all of Iain M Banks books, and I read Inversions the year after it was first published in 1999, and it has stayed with me ever since. ![]() ![]() ![]() The concluding stanza, a repeat of the intro, leaves that rhythm in the mind as one ends the poem. The intro stanza is written without an end rhyme scheme, but instead contains two stressed words in each line to prep the reader for the rhythm that awaits in the quatrains. Service’s ballad-form poem sets up a rhyme scheme ( aabb ) and holds it consistently throughout every quatrain. While travelling, it would be much easier to recite and remember a song or poem when it contained the poetic structure of meter, rhyme, repetition, and stanzas (in this case quatrains). Sung by Europeans in the early fourteenth century. Yes, the content is appealing - poor Sam Mcgee - but is there another element at play with this piece that sears the poem into one’s memory? Service deserves a high-level of praise for his level of poetic skill, showcased in his legendary piece. “There are strange things done in the midnight sun…”Īs soon as eyes read, or ears hear, that famous opening line, the brain slides into its automatic rhythm. ![]() The Spymasters by W.E.B. What was a nice surprise with this book was the introduction of a new character, James D. My favorites being this series, Honor Bound, and the Presidential Agent series. I can understand some of the criticism from some of the reviews about the authors' tendency towards anachronistic dialogue and soap opera-ish (I think I have created a new word there.) drama in the characters' personal lives, but if you can get beyond that, Griffin masterfully weaves history with fiction into a highly entertaining tale. A few indignant students held a rally, the professor apologized, and the president insisted, “The use of this-or any racial slur-in our community is unacceptable.” But, of course, students at Emory University and every other campus hear the N-word all the time in the music they play. Recently at my campus, for instance, a law professor sparked a complaint from students after he mentioned the N-word in class, even though the point he made was entirely academic and the comment occurred during a discussion of hate speech. It’s not the chaired professors and deans who wield the most intimidation, but the lowly young ones, the undergraduates, particularly if they are members of disadvantaged groups. In recent times, however, an inversion has taken place. In spite of egalitarian talk issuing from professors and administrators, college is one of the most stratified enclaves on earth.
